When Melissa first spied the 4 bed/2 bath bungalow on “Little Eastern” in Takoma Park, she instantly fell in love. From the wavy glass windows to the original wood and mid-century fixtures, she couldn’t wait to get to work with her plans to restore the home.
Old meets new. Restored windows and refinished floors meld with modern design elements and amenities.
If These Walls Could Talk…
The property, built in 1928, was home to a prominent Takoma Park family since its construction. In the basement, you can still see initials carved into the cement when they expanded the home in the 1950s. The family owned a sporting goods shop and built the oversized 2-car garage in order to store bicycles and equipment. “The pride of ownership is clear,” Melissa said. “You can tell that it was loved.”
Before: Unfortunately, the wallpaper tore badly during removal and Melissa was unable to preserve a piece to frame as she had hoped.
Pearl Gregory owned the home for more than half a century. What will the next chapter hold?
Details Matter.
The open concept kitchen features stainless steel appliances and lots of storage.
Going to open houses is a passion and a sport for most designers, and Melissa is no exception. However, viewing too many examples of slap-dash efforts to modernize the home left her feeling underwhelmed. 6617 Eastern is more or less a new home – brand new roof, a/c installed, new heat pump, and a stunning open concept kitchen. However, she also had the wavy windows completely restored, stayed true to the original color scheme when redoing the 2nd bath, and restored the beautiful hardwood oak flooring.
The new, modern bath features a custom-built double vanity
